1) CNC building skill (e.g 3D printer)
2) arduino, CNC shield, Steeper motor drivers
3) Steeper motors x 2 (X &Y ) minimum
4) limit switches
5) PSU 12V >5A
6) GT2 belts, pulleys, idlers
7) linear rails (1000mm x 2, 500-600mm x 2), linear blocks (if necessary)
8) electrical wires
9) zip ties
10) laptop (for firmware modifications and control)
11) choice of cutting head as the machine cutter

Team 3:
TITLE: Arduino for senior citizens/ very young kids
DESCRIPTION: Many seniors (70+ years) are interested in learning to hack with Arduinos, makey makeys etc. however, they have some challenges linke vision problems that inhibit the correct connection of pins, shaking hands during soldering, difficulty in working with crocodile clips etc. Can we come up with some simple hacks to enable these seniors to programme arduinos more effectively? Incidentally, this can also be a good hack to help really young kids (5 and under who also have trouble with crocodile clips and such

TITLE: Scientific Authorship Visualisation
DESCRIPTION: What would a scientific paper look like, if you plotted the authors of a scientific paper on a world map? This visualisation tool would take in metadata from a scientific paper (or scraped it off the web), and plot the affiliations of the authors on a world map. While most papers would look rather sparse, the visualisation for the LIGO or LHC papers might look rather interesting!
EQUIPMENT/SKILLS/PEOPLE NEEDED:
- Web scraping/Bibtex and other metadata parsing/elbow grease
- R/Python/JavaScript/whatever programming tool of your choice

TITLE: Where the heck am I pointing?
DESCRIPTION: Manual telescopes rely on seat of the pants astronavigation in order to locate objects in the sky. Can a mobile phone be mounted on such a scope, with its magnetic and accelerometer sensors calibrated on the spot to give relatively accurate coordinates to locate stars and deep sky objects?
EQUIPMENT/SKILLS/PEOPLE NEEDED:
- Android phone with compass and accelerometer
- Someone familiar with phone-based sensors for direction finding in the sky
- Tube on a Tripod (telescope mockup)

- Is it something similar to skymap? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid&hl=en
- Yes, it's similar to skymap, but the idea is to get an adaptor to mount the phone onto a telescope tube and align everything so you can use your phone as a crude locator. So in principle we just need to have skymap or any other stargazing software, and then it's a hardware hack to get it aligned to the scope tube.

TITLE: Drone tow truck
DESCRIPTION: Drones with electromagnetic pickups so that a swarm of them can come and haul off illegally parked cars. A working scale model might be fine for Science Hack Day...
EQUIPMENT/SKILLS/PEOPLE NEEDED:
- A few drones
- Stuff to build electromagnets
- A 1:12 scale metal toy car
- Programming one channel on a TX/RX to activate and deactive an electromagnet.

TITLE: Dog Mood Reader
DESCRIPTION: Dogs express their emotions not just through their tails, but also through the set of their ears, their eyes, and their mouth. Using machine vision and learning, establish a machine learning model that can accurately detect these features from a photo of a dog's face and thus determine a dog's mood.
EQUIPMENT/SKILLS/PEOPLE NEEDED:
- Machine vision/image recognition/machine learning
- R/Python/Julia
- A bunch of tagged dog photos

- This sounds interesting. Are you gonna create a model during the hackday? or reuse existing one? we have cognitive services from MS that might be able to help on this.
- Frankly, I've got no idea how to begin. Computer vision is still on my to-learn list! I thought of seeing how a generic face detection algorithm would work with a pic of a dog, and then training it as we go along. Also for dogs, the nose is really the most prominent feature, once you locate that, you should be able to detect whether it's "smiling" or not. Then add another feature detection for the ears. Do combos of both mouth posture and ear posture to determine mood.
