Libraries' Active Role in Community Building
- Come from backgrounds that don't have appreciation for libraries
- Institution that did exist were destroyed or not funded
- How can the community be pulled in to benefit development
- Agency, libraries have lost the power, perception perhaps
- Can champions of freedoms, human rights activists
- Creating the culture where libraries are valued in the U.S., basic things like access to information, access to internet
- Legitimize existence, library advocacy
- Library Week, www.geekthelibrary.org, http://www.ilovelibraries.org/ and other initiatives to demonstrate the value/impact of libraries for society
- Contact with authors, politicians
- Libraries conducting workshops on finding jobs, resume writing
- Library as a space for community events, knitting, writing
- Neutral space that is a hub for all different parts of society
- Model where the superstructure of thru state
- We need to go back and read at the individual level
- Role to make sure people are aware
- Do not appreciate what we have
- Make cultural institutions central to our fabric
- Still need permission from the government control
- Need to be willing to go afoul of the political system with our agenda, form own opinions
- How will government control entities that arise like national libraries even if they didn't fund
- Civic education collection
- Showing all opinions and information
- Censorship
- Local government or local communities
