Encouraging Reading Culture
Participants: Romany Craig, Erin Clupp, Victoria Ngeno, Beryl, Cathleen de Groot, Lisa Reynolds, Abed
- Difference is huge in students who have had a background that encourages reading, their academic skills are improved. Can see the difference quite clearly.
- Have small leisure collection to encourage reading.
- If all you read is boring textbooks, you aren't going to enjoy reading
- Interested in, from perspective of parent
- Incorporating different technologies
- Lots of distractions, hard to get them to focus
- Encourage their creativity, adaptation of books into movies example
- Challenging to force selves to read
- Read studies that people read differently between electronic and print, scanning versus line by line
- Print ebooks
- Students from particular schools are valued due to their background in research and reading, need to take this back to the high school level
- Students are not being read to at home
- At one school, students are mostly checking out graphic novels
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the most popular, repeated check outs
- Are graphic novels the way to go?
- How do you get them to read? Not necessarily reading full sentences
- Teachers are encouraging, however, the books are not necessarily promoting this
- One has to be a chapter book, one non-fiction/one fiction, negotiate variety of types of books, two English/one Arabic
- Can force them check out books, but not force them to read
- Culture today everywhere, challenge everywhere
- Where we are getting information from has changed, most people use mobile tech
- Does it matter if they are only reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
- Sentences are too short to have variety and understand meaning of different words
- How do we transition from short sentences and graphic novels to more complex texts? Aren't getting the full benefit of reading
- Secondary participation dwindles
- Do not have a concept of what a library does, very difficult behavioural issues, getting them to settle down in Library
- Thoughtful responses to survey are important, how did they find these books
- Difficult to find books
- Coupons for reading books, in US had program to encourage reading http://www.bookitprogram.com/
- Different use of libraries in cultures, would make a big difference to other countries to have public libraries, to encourage kids to read all the time
- Not all SEC libraries are similar and there are gaps between each
- Part of curriculum it is more likely to happen, if it is optional it will not get done
- Teacher has program to bring two books per week home, track, progress in reading
- Reading part of daily routine, rather than additional or burden activity, needs to be part of process of learning
- Librarian and teachers need to collaborate
- Open house with parents to address the concerns and understand the value of reading and what libraries are doing, what each year level should be doing
- Basic things, like how to take care of books
- Make it relatable
- Need to push agenda for information literacy at all levels
- Book discussion success at QNL
- Discussion of having teen book club at QNL
- Some challenges with having enough copies of the book for clubs
- Interlibrary loan system, possibilities for building collections overall
- Why are people so interested in Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
- Easy to read
- When kids come across a difficult word they get deflated
- Need to guide them through the process of reading
- Daughter read book that made her hate reading, need to teach that you don't have to read a particular book that they don't like
- Allow them to recommend books to other students
