Welcome to the Knowledge Pad for the i-KNOW 2015 PhD Cooperation Event!
===========================================================================
The PhD Cooperation Event is held as part of the i-KNOW 2015 (http://i-know.tugraz.at/) in Graz, Austria. It takes place on Wednesday, 21st October 2015, at 14:00 - 16.00h.
To get a better picture how the session looks like you can have a look at last year's iKNOW photos, which include some photos of the event: https://www.flickr.com/photos/49520289@N04/sets/72157646473868794/.
Participation
All registered participants of i-KNOW are welcome to this session. We particularly encourage the following people to attend:
- Anyone who is currently working on a PhD thesis dealing with knowledge management, knowledge technologies or semantic technologies, knowledge context, sensors, and mobile devices, knowledge evolution and discovery, Linked Data or the Semantic Web, data processing and visualization.
- PhD students with questions about how to proceed with a particular PhD project or who want to receive feedback on ideas or methodologies.
- Anyone who has recently finished a PhD and wants to shortly present findings or novel approaches.
- And anyone who is generally interested in the work of current PhD students and wants to get some insights into topics that are currently being worked on.
Format
After some general introduction and welcome notes, there will be the entertaining, but motivating keynote by Mark Kröll (Know Center) sharing some of his PhD experiences, followed by a brief get-to-know-each-other. Afterwards, the group will discuss about the PhD research process and any questions that come up. This is a rather informal session with no fixed agenda, so we invite you to shape the topics for this session.
Topics
After a short introductory session, we'll have time for discussions – please help us set up some interesting topics by adding questions and suggestions to this etherpad.

PhD Cooperation Community
===========================================================================
As decided on the PhD Cooperation Event at i-KNOW 2013, we wanted to stay in contact and build a PhD Cooperation Community. This should serve the need to ask questions, which do not fit in normal mentor student discussions or exchange ideas, experiences and book/ article references etc. Therein we could not only store the gathered questions/answers and experiences, but also invite you to take part in projects of the WM-forum (http://wm-forum.org/) .
If you have a question or recommendation, please add it below and inform all member by sending an email.
So, state your email address below if you are interested.
Contacts of participants who want to stay in contact:
- Carla: cbarreiros@know-center.at
- Sebastian: sdennerlein@know-center.at
- Patrick: phoefler@know-center.at
- Rene: rene.kaiser@joanneum.at
- Sebastian: Sebastian.Schmidt@kom.tu-darmstadt.de
- Christopher: Christopher.Koska@Bertelsmann.de
- Christian: christian.hentschel@hpi.de
- ADD YOUR NAME HERE
Interesting books and papers (please add link to reference if available)
Experiences
- Doctoral Consortium: Get to know your research community and get feedback on your research topic!
- Enter a research community: Ask for a research visit, exchange program etc.

Exchange programs
- Is it possible to spend an extended period (say, a year) at another university?
- (Peter) I would say that in general it is possible to stay abroad for longer than just a couple of months. As with all types of grants/fellowships, I suggest that you first check your university's exchange programs. After that you could check out funding on the national level (public and private). Finally, also the European Union has a program for individual researchers; it is called Marie Curie: http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/about-mca/actions/index_en.htm I am not sure if they offer individual grants for PhDs but you should check it out.
- Is this common or encouraged in a PhD program? As far as I know, internships or research visits are quite common, but these generally last only one to three months. Has anybody spent a year abroad during their PhD?
- Do you think it would be adviseable to do this?
- (Rene) I guess one of the issues you have to think about is how to maintain the focus of your work. When you join a remote team, typically you'll contribute to their project and focus. If this doesn't exactly fit the core of your thesis but is just a side aspect, a year sounds very long.
- (Patrick) Basically, I was given the same advice: Going abroad is always a good idea, but you shouldn't count on making any progress regarding your PhD during that time ;) However, you should probably also check the terms of your PhD program and talk to your supervisor.
- (Peter) I would say that depends strongly on the type of funding that you receive during this period. If you are funded by a joint project, or even by the institution that you are visiting, then you might find yourself caught up in their research. If you, however, have your "own" funding (e.g. through a fellowship), then you do not need to report to the institution but rather to the fellowship. This gives you much more flexibility on what you choose to work on. Generally, I also prefer shorter stays but I would absolutely recommend to go abroad for some time during your PhD - it is very rewarding and you might even find yourself having more time for your PhD as you are not involved in the day-to-day operations of your home institution any more.
