Open science outside English-speaking communities: Founding a german-speaking Open Science Working Group
This will be a kick-off meeting for a German-speaking Open Science Working Group. We want to bring together the different spheres of opening up science in the German-speaking countries to focus more on the German-speaking scientific culture and specific aspects regarding the German-speaking countries. Connecting the existing open scientists, learning from already started working groups and getting in touch with other open communities. It will consist of people from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

There is a very thriving English-speaking Open Science Community. But to convince more people and local science communities to open up research, we need to focus more on particular local circumstances. The German-speaking world with its population of nearly 100 Million and many research institutes is a big community inside the international community - with it's own cultural history and language in terms of science. Opening up the German-language science would lead to a more diverse global discourse around Open Science.

Set up a local Open Science Working Group to facilitate the Idea of opening up Science in the German-speaking countries. Get an idea about concrete activities, projects and targets of such a group - from hacking needed software over publishing positions on Open Science to educate people about open principles. Bring together people who are interested in launching local supgroups to continue the discussion and foster activities.

Short Introduction to the topic of Open Science and a first draft of the mission statement done by a core group. Open Discussion whether and how a German-speaking working group could facitilate the idea of open science in German-speaking countries. Collect ideas for projects and implement the mailing list as central communication tool.

This session contributes to OKFest's "Knowledge informs change" and its aim to discuss ways of unlocking, expanding and sharing knowledge. The Session will help to find out whether we can do this more effectively in local open science groups and how these groups can interact. It's a big opportunity for the German-speaking open science community to begin their efforts on the Berlin-based OKFestival 2014, which bring people and ideas together.
