Travelling Toolbox - Project Overview / Discussion

Juat to say that when I was over in France last week the AP guys were really keen to give us support or advice on what would be good to have. Their kit was really good and comprehensive - band saw, chop saw, stick welders and units, lots of three phase cabling with a mobile distribution unit; multiple sets of welding masks, gloves, hammers, wire brushes etc etc. I still have the full list of what kit they think we need . And they were very lovely :) [beckx]

Darren has some contacts that may be able to help source a trailer.
Should we get aDedicated tow vehicle? (I suggest not initially - see how things go - how oftenis it used?? can hire tow motor if necessay)

Criteria for trailer
3.5 tonnes max (worth considering 2.5 tonne - towable by a larger number of vehicles, only non HGVs that can legally tow 3.5 tonne are big(long wheel base) 4x4s )
~20ft
need to be able to stand in it
Twin axle, old catering unit might be something to look for.

</=£2K??

Added bonuses
Awning  (not too hard to string a tarp up but obviously nice if its there)
Side opening
(suggest we could use a flat trailer and put box from transit or similar on it)
Getting a transit box in the 20' category could be quite difficult.

Farm tools only? Or other events? - I like the idea of other events/uses - in support of small scale / community project
s (that would be cool - rocking up and making things for community growing projects would go down really well and extend what people are exposed to, as well as being useful. Can also link with social centres/more urban stuff yeah ++++, would like to see links with social projects as week as growing projects.

Geographic scope - Regional or National?  INTERNATIONAL ++ (well start national - being able to stash different sets of kit in different regions would be nice but guess we'd have to scale to that over time) that's what wheels are for surely.

Proposal text - https://pad.okfn.org/p/mw-proposed-idea
Funding Sources - https://pad.okfn.org/p/mw-funding-sources - having had a quick look through these the only one which looks like it might be a goer is the Jephcott Trust one - we wouldn't qualify for many of the others because we're not a charity - it provides capital costs of up to £10,000 in most cases (which suggests that the form isn't too onerous to fill in) - we would probably best qualify under their Education heading. Having said all that, they have a fairly dodgy history, as their money comes from Glaxo pharmacueticals. Am happy to have a look at the form and see if it's worth trying for if people think it's a good idea [beckx]
Donations?
Sonia has offered to put in 2000 to get things rolling

Crowdfunding?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jasonchua/sparklab-an-educational-build-mobile/description
Be good to get a video, Greentech has photo's of workshops we've run we can do some filming at Barncamp

Sonia suggested we could possibly do something at Red PIg Farm - alhtougn it might not be ideal. red piggers went mental. could still happen if scrivs etc get money. unlkely and not until autumn at earliest
Confirmed that we can do it in Holtsfield
Did Sam say something about his place???

 http://farmhack.org/wiki/mobile-workshop?  or something else?

look for trailer
 - everyone - post details to this pad

make kit list of what we have already https://pad.okfn.org/p/mw-existing_tools
and what we would want to have in the trailer

beckx will carry on looking for grant funding both for the physical stuff, and for paying for delivering workshops to particular places/to particular groups

work out what skills we have in the group, and does that match up to the jobs which need doing-doing

Finalise a mission statement or something similar https://pad.okfn.org/p/mw-proposed-idea

and start the total propaganda war when this is done.

Get a name https://pad.okfn.org/p/mw-proposed-idea

Look for insurance quotes (maybe ask people doing something similarish where they get their insurance???) look into options for - insure workers of incorporated organisation only and for doing education.  The green woodworkers organisation/association that does the bodgers ball has a very cheap deal for their memebrs to teach woodworking - could we use that?  or who provides their insurance?

Metalwork - x2.5
Off Grid Electrics - x3+1/2+1
Carpentry - x1-2(ish)3+1

Boxes & Chassis
