Library association grants

challenge of entering a mid career exchange or residency in comparison to early career as a new librarian

case study:
decision to resign after several years of work for an internship
-- tip: try to get funding from an international organization
-- "leap of faith" needed to go from current position as a manager and to start again as an intern at another library
-- follow-up position at the new institution after internship

going abroad - taking your family with you

attending conferences to work on your cv and background for international job

radical step is needed in the mid career like resigning (above) or being lucky and getting unpaid leave for several years

academic environment: librarian might have not the standing to go on a paid conference trip like a professor or other staff

fringe benefits of professional development - being happier, doing networking - hard to justify

focus on one conference to get deeper in touch with the community vs. attending only once

sometimes to give presentations or to be a member of SC is the best way to get funding to attend conferences

Other option is to have someone come to your library to bring new ideas and input on your practices.

Being a mentor is also a very good way to learn by questioning why you do what you do, and rethinking

Maybe change within your library to a different branch, change of type of library within your community, no need to move abroad or travel far away.
Neither is needed to do it for a long time, just a few weeks here and there could be very enriching.

Case study: Manager wants his/her stafff to experience an international/national exchange or residency at least one time.
