OpenScienceMeetupCPH Open access/Open Science meetup in Copenhagen

Thursday 25th September, 17.00-19.00, at a cafe(?) in central Copenhagen

I'll (Niels Erik) will try to ask Cafe Nutid (http://cafenutid.dk/), if they have space. Alternative suggestions are welcome here: ......
Update: Cafe Nutid hasn't  replied, but theres an other event starting at 20. indicating, that it'll be available from 17-19. So I think we should chose this venue, alternatives arre close by if everything happens to fail...

This will be a first meetup introducing the ideas of open access/open science as well as actual practice within the field. Ideally the meetup can function as a starting point to connect open science-interested people in DK/Cph.

Tentitative agenda:
    - Welcome + who's Open Knowledge Denmark, very short (~ 3 min)
    - Introduction to Open Access, David Carroll: Short introduction to the principles of Open Access. What, why, how? (5-10 min)
    - Martin Borch: Short introduction to open science, concrete open science projects, biologigaragen/citizen science. (15-20 min?)
    - David Carroll: Open Access Button and open access activism/student activism (15-20 min?)
    - Questions, networking, small talk

How to make people show up/know about the event: spread the word through Open Knowledge DK blog (dk.okfn.org), mailinglist, Twitter, Facebook and word of mouth. Spread flyers/posters at universities? Who has good connections to student communities or the like?
 - I'm currently studying at the University of Copenhagen so I can spread the word there (David)
 - I have a few connections to DTU and also biology at KU (Malthe)

Blogpost is up at: http://dk.okfn.org/2014/09/15/get-involved-with-open-access-meetup-om-aben-videnskab-i-kobenhavn/ - Thanks for drafting everyone! Let me know if I missed something.
 - I can [...] push to the people I know and through biologigaragen maillist and newsletter.
 - noce, I hope it made sense to use a danish term - ps. will you tweet it?

Foreløbig dagsorden:
    - Christian Villum ? Velkomst + hvem er Open Knowledge Denmark, meget kort (~ 3 min)
    - Hvem kan lave en god introduktion, David Carroll?: Kort introduktion til principperne for open access/open science. Hvad, hvorfor og hvordan? (15-20 min?)

Who's planning to attend (place your name below...)
- Niels Erik Kaaber Rasmussen (will only attend first ~15 min, sorry)
- David Carroll, Open Access Button
- Kim Bach
- Martin Malthe Borch
- Christian Villum
- Lasse Skovgaard Jensen
- Finn Årup Nielsen, faan@dtu.dk, DTU Compute, @fnielsen.

Open access buttion introduction, mark when you hit a pay-wall.
Tetrahaidron 39000 USD one person one year.

publishing is generally very expensive, but does it need to be?
subscriptions of scientific journals pr. year averaging on ~1500 pounds pr. year
Elsevier, springer etc. have among the highest for profit margins across the board (higher than McDonalds etc.) - earned by owning rights to papers on science that is 80% publicly funded.
80% of research is publicly funded - shouldn't the public have access?
OA builds on this idea; "free immediate online access to scientific and scholarly research"

Two paths to Open Access:
    Self-archiving
Open Access journals - over 9,000 journals across the world (Plos One is an example, very well regarded)
Lots or repositories (over 2000) for OA publishing

OA programs across the world
- Kenya, "Students Have a Right to Access" (?)
- UK, BMA

How to become an Open Access advocate?

Slides will be online on slideshare.com

Martin Malthe Borch - open science projects (and related projects)
Examples of crowdsourcing (but not citizen science, although many see it as such)

Citizen science is more based on public effort, collecting and uploading the data - in an open database

Everyone can join Biologigaragen, not just for biologists and academics
